Famous for wind and fog, the region’s summer temperatures usually hover around 18 degrees Celsius. Sudden changes in the weather are nothing new in Newfoundland and Labrador, where locals often say, “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.”
A heat wave in Newfoundland lifted temperatures to an all-time high this week (July 2014). The humidex value rose to a record-breaking 38.7 at the St. John’s airport on Wednesday. The previous record humidex was 38.5 C on July 6, 1983. The province has only reached the 30 degree mark nine times in the past 72 years. As the old newfie saying goes ~ It be so hot with the sun splittin’ da rocks.
